How much does an upright piano weigh?
Spinets start near 300 pounds, studio uprights run about 400, and a classic full-size upright often passes 500. Weight sits high in the cabinet, which makes balance rather than raw strength the deciding factor on stairs.
Does a piano need to be tuned after it is moved?
Almost always, yes. The tuning drifts because wood expands and contracts as the instrument settles into a new room with different humidity, not because of vibration on the truck or the roughness of the road.
How long should I wait before tuning a piano after a move?
Give the instrument two to four weeks in its new room first. Tuning it the same week means paying for work that the wood will undo as it acclimates to the temperature and humidity around it.
Can a grand piano be moved without removing the legs?
Not safely. Grand legs are designed to hold weight straight down while the piano sits still, not to absorb the side loads of a carry. The case rides on a padded board instead, with the legs off.
Is it safe to move a piano on its side?
For grands, yes, and it is standard practice. The strings and plate handle that position without complaint. Uprights are different and stay vertical, because tipping one puts stress on parts that were never braced for it.
What equipment do professional piano movers use?
Piano boards or skids, heavy straps, four-wheel dollies, thick moving blankets, ramps, and rigging for hoists. The board carries the load so no single person is holding several hundred pounds at an awkward angle.
